Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions?
What contaminants does a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system actually remove from my water?
Reverse Osmosis systems provide thorough purification that significantly reduces a wide variety of contaminants often found in municipal and bottled water, including:
- Microplastics: Tiny plastic particles linked to hormonal imbalances and environmental concerns.
- Pharmaceutical residues: Trace medications that conventional water treatment processes struggle to fully remove.
- Chlorine and chlorine byproducts: Chemicals affecting taste, smell, and overall health.
- Heavy metals: Lead, mercury, arsenic, and other harmful metals.
- Dissolved solids: Various mineral impurities impacting water clarity and flavor.
With RO filtration, your drinking water is consistently pure, safe, and refreshing, providing peace of mind for you and your family.
Is the installation process complicated or disruptive to my home? How long does it typically take?
Installation is typically straightforward, clean, and minimally invasive:
- Standard under-counter installations: Usually completed in about an hour, involving minimal drilling or modifications.
- Custom or basement installations: More extensive setups (such as basement placements or running lines through cabinetry or walls) usually take between 2 and 4 hours.
Regardless of installation complexity, we always leave your home tidy and ensure you understand every step clearly.
How often does my Reverse Osmosis system require maintenance or filter replacements?
Proper maintenance ensures your RO system consistently delivers optimal water quality. Specifically, within the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), high-quality municipal water allows filters and membranes to typically last longer than average:
- Pre-filters: Typically last 12–18 months, depending on household water usage and local conditions.
- RO Membrane: High-quality membranes like the GRO-75 commonly last 4–7 years, sometimes even longer, with proper care and consistent usage patterns.
- Post-filters: Usually replaced every 12–18 months to maintain ideal water taste and freshness.
However, these are general guidelines. Actual lifespans will vary based on individual usage, water conditions, and regular system maintenance.
At PuroTech, we pride ourselves on transparency, meaning we never suggest unnecessary replacements. Our recommendations are always based on your specific water quality, not on rigid timelines.
I’ve heard that Reverse Osmosis systems “waste” water. Is this true, and why does it happen?
It’s true that all Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems produce some wastewater, but it’s not wasteful in the traditional sense. It serves an essential purpose in keeping the system clean.
- Why is wastewater produced?
Reverse Osmosis works by forcing water through a very fine membrane. The contaminants left behind (microplastics, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, dissolved solids, etc.) must be flushed out periodically, resulting in some water being discharged down the drain. - What is this wastewater exactly?
The wastewater is simply concentrated tap water containing the rejected impurities. It’s not toxic or harmful. It’s just higher in dissolved minerals and contaminants than regular tap water. - Why PuroTech is different?
Traditional RO systems can waste as much as 3–4 gallons of water for every gallon purified. Our advanced Pentair GRO-75 high-efficiency membrane reduces this dramatically to a highly efficient 1:1 ratio; meaning for each gallon of clean water produced, just one gallon of wastewater is discharged.
We strongly believe in transparency and educating our customers, helping them understand exactly how their system works and how it’s protecting their water quality and their health.
